In 1998, Washington state voters approved Initiative 200 which stated:

The state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting.

Initiative 200 effectively curtailed discrimination against Asian Americans (affirmative action).

In April 2019, the Washington Legislature passed Initiative 1000, which allows discrimination against Asian Americans (affirmative action).

Referendum Measure 88 will give voters, not politicians, the final decision on Initiative 1000.
